Boxing Footwork Tips – It’s Easier Than You Think!

In order to have perfect footwork in boxing, you have to follow the most important tip in boxing…

You’ve got to RELAX!

Just like everything else in boxing, if you are tense and not confident in yourself, you’ll look rigid and uptight. Boxing is all about rhythm and if you don’t have any, it will hurt you.

This is why I make it mandatory for music to be playing in the gym when I’m working out or working with any new fighter. The music relaxes everyone in the gym and allows us to perform better.

I tell my fighters to think more about the music or think of their favorite song in their head and box-dance to it. Box-dance is simply getting in your fighting stance and have a rhythm to your body as you listen to the music. Keep your legs loose and stay on the balls of your feet. Don’t be embarrassed! Feel free to move around almost as if you’re dancing.

Make sure you are doing this in front of a mirror because just like your shadow boxing workout, you’ll be able to see yourself and notice what flows nicely and smoothly.

I can’t emphasize it enough, DO NOT FEEL EMBARRASSED. Boxing is about style so develop your style of footwork.

Footwork Tips & Drills

The most important thing for being a master with your footwork is to make sure you stay light on your feet. There was only one champion that I could think of in the history of boxing that was a flat-footed champion, Joe Louis.

There are some simple things you can do to assure that you will stay light on your feet while boxing…

  1. Jump Rope Daily- In order to be effective at jumping rope, you must stay on your toes while you jump. Most people I know hate jumping rope because of how tricky it can be at first. Once again, just like everything in boxing, you should remain relaxed and have a rhythm while you jump rope.

  2. Plyometrics Training- Plyometrics teaches you to do explosive movements but also forces you to stay on the balls of your feet because the balls of your feet are where you can generate the most explosiveness.

One of my favorite plyometrics exercises for developing quick feet is to lay a heavy bag flat on the ground and quickly and rapidly jump over the bag back and forth for a minute. I try to minimize the time my foot touches the ground to as little as possible. Meaning, as soon as my foot touches the other side, I’m jumping to the next side.
