When choosing boxing gloves there are a few things you should look for. One of the first things that many people overlook is deciding whether you’ll be doing your training by yourself or with people around.

Why does that matter when purchasing boxing gloves?

Well, there are a view types of boxing gloves, hook and loop and lace up are the most popular. Hook and loop gloves secure the glove on your hand tight and snug with a simple Velcro strap. Lace up gloves on the other hand, are tightened like shoe laces.

If you’ll always have someone around, I prefer lace up gloves because they are more snug. However, if no one is around to tie your gloves, you won’t be able to box so the gloves will be pointless. If that is going to be the case, you should choose hook and loop gloves since you can tighten them yourself with the Velcro.

Boxing gloves come in various weights ranging from 8oz all the way up to 24oz gloves (they look like giant pillows on your hands). The 8oz gloves are the ones that most professional fighters wear during their fight. However, for training, I recommend 16oz gloves because they do work the muscles in your arms without hampering your punch speed too much.

I prefer to use these more for my heavy bag workout than for sparring because they are a bit soft. The softness protects my hands better for when I work the bag, but when I spar, I like to use other gloves.
